Rome, you are absolutely amazing! Today was a very long day. Nasko and I got up and were out of the house by 730. We had a date with two guided tours! We never take tours with guides; but in this city there is just so much to know. It’s impossible to keep up with everything without some direction.
So yes, we were shuffling along in a crowd, following our leaders flag with our earphones in. Weaving our way through the masses as a group. It was great! We had a 4 hour tour through the Vatican museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peters Basilica. The Vatican is special! They shared the history of the church, the ebbs and flows of its power, the intertwined politics, the drama, the money, the families.
As we met our tour group, our tour guide was sure to check everyone’s clothes to make sure everyone was appropriate or had the means to make their outfit appropriate. We are familiar with the standards from other cathedrals we’ve visited. I had planned accordingly and covered my shoulders and knees. Our tour guide then looked at Nasko and asked him to stand. She was worried that his shorts weren’t long enough. Apparently the knees of a man are also inappropriate to be showing in the Vatican. Nasko sagged his pants and asked, “what about this? Is this okay?” Apparently, showing a little tushie is more appropriate than those sexy knee caps!
The beauty and art in this small country is unbelievable! The sculptures, the paintings, the structures are all unrivaled to date.
We then grabbed a quick bite to eat before headed to meet our next tour guide. Next up: the Colosseum, the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. I can’t describe the feelings of walking through these places. The beauty and the horrors these bricks have seen is unimaginable. As grateful as I am to live in the 21st century, I can’t help but be curious what life must have been like back in those days. It’s hard to imagine with the rush and crowds of tourists but in the quiet moments my imagination is having a field day.
Today was unbelievable. We are so tired! We absolutely crashed when we got home. Hopefully our feet recover for tomorrow. 🙂
