In Deuteronomy, the Bible says “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.”
Well all I can say is mission accomplished – times two! Today is Nasko and my second wedding anniversary. Two years ago was a magical day. But all the days since that day are the real story.
The first two years of our marriage we went on the run. We spent an amazing two years in Europe. It was full of many things that we love – sports, friends, beaches, road trips. It was also full of huge steps as husband and wife – learning how to love each other.
Being away for Nasko and I was challenging. I mean, Europe is great! We lived it up! But we were away from our support system. We were away from our families, mentors, church and best friends. We had no where to go when times got tough. We were thousands of miles from our comfort zone – literally.
Marriage isn’t easy. A lot of people say the first year is the hardest. We made a conscience decision to make our first years as a married couple in a situation that would force us to come together. We learned SO much about each other and about ourselves during this time.
Now, two years in, we are home! We are throwing ourselves back into our life in America where it all started. We are still learning. But the foundation we have is one which has been tried and tested. I’m so thankful for God giving us the opportunity to run away together! Looking forward, we continue to lean on Him as He guides us into our next phase of life.
If you’re a young couple looking to get married; I highly recommend an extended getaway. Put a priority on your marriage! Find a way to get out of your comfort zone and be vulnerable with each other. Your future self will thank you!
